08/06 - 09/06/2023: Variabilität und Wandel: Festtagung zum 60. Geburtstag von Prof. Dr. Arne Ziegler

Project associates Stefanie Edler and Ann Kathrin Fischer presented at the conference Variabilität und Wandel, a festive event on the occasion of the 60th birthday of project leader Arne Ziegler. Stefanie Edler talked about "Des is gonz a ondere Sprache wie in Graz – Vergleichspartikeln im Vergleich: Variation in Stadt und Stadtperipherie im Deutschen in Österreich" and Ann Kathrin Fischer presented to "Grazer /l/-Variation. Von dialektraum(un)typisch gebrauchten /l/-Varianten in der Transitionszone Süd-/Mittelbairisch". The talks also resulted in articles printed in the jubilee publication Variabilität und Wandel. Sprache im Spannungsfeld zwischen System und Gebrauch. Festschrift für Arne Ziegler zum 60. Geburtstag, edited by Christian Braun and Elisabeth Scherr, and published by the Praesens Verlag (Vienna).

12/05 - 13/05/2023: Soziolinguistische Perspektiven: Kontakt – Variation – Wandel

Project associates Stefanie Edler, Ann Kathrin Fischer and Gerrit Tscheru participated in the conference on Sociolinguistic Perspectives: Contact - Variation - Change at the University of Bern. Gerrit Tscheru held a talk about adjective intensification entitled "Von voll besoffenen Typen und komplett korrekter Standardsprache. Zur Adjektivintensivierung im Raum Wien und Graz" and Stefanie Edler presented "Variation im urbanen Raum: Gesprochenes Deutsch in Wien und Graz", a talk which included results of different linguistic levels from the research project as a cooperation with her colleague Ann Kathrin Fischer.

22/09 - 24/09/2022: Conference "Das heutige gesprochene Deutsch zwischen Sprachkontakt und Sprachwandel"

In the course of the conference "Das heutige gesprochene Deutsch zwischen Sprachkontakt und Sprachwandel" (Contemporary spoken German between language contact and language change), which took place in Turin from 22 - 24 September 2022, project leader Arne Ziegler presented as pelanary lecturer to "Aktuelle Tendenzen gesprochener Sprache im urbanen Raum Österreichs" (Current tendencies of spoken language in the urban area of Austria). Another presentation was held by the project associates Teresa Monsberger and Gerrit Tscheru concerning adjective intensification, in a lecture entitled "Von richtig geilen Zimtschnecken und superhässlichen Dialekten. Adjektivintensivierung im Raum Wien und Graz".

13/07 - 16/07/2022: 24. Sociolinguistics Symposium in Ghent

At this year's Sociolinguistics Symposium in Ghent, with the conference theme Inside and Beyond Binaries, scientific associates Teresa Monsberger and Gerrit Tscheru organised a colloquium with colleagues from the Special Research Programme "German in Austria". At this colloquium, called Targeting (socio-)linguistic complexity from multiple perspectives: Variation, contact and perception in German in Austria, Dragana Rakocevic presented to "External multilingualism in Austria: Umlaut-realizations among 1st generation B/C/M/S speakers in Graz and Vienna" and Teresa Monsberger and Gerrit Tscheru to "How good can it be – how bad can it get? Adjective intensification in Austria".

06/07 - 08/07/2022: Lecture at the IGDD in Salzburg

Project associate Stefanie Edler gave together with colleagues Lars Bülow, Georg Oberdorfer and Philip Vergeiner a presentation entitled "Zum Abbau der synthetischen Konjunktivformen im ruralen und urbanen Nonstandard in Österreich" (On the degradation of synthetic subjunctive forms in the rural and urban non-standard in Austria) at the 7th Congress of the International Society for Dialectology of German (IGDD), which took place from 06-08 July 2022 at the University of Salzburg under the conference title "Dialekte im sozialen Raum: Formen – Verwendungen – Bedeutungen" (Dialects in Social Space: Forms - usage patterns - meanings).

23/06/2022: Guest lecture at the University of Vienna

Project associates Ann Kathrin Fischer and Teresa Monsberger gave a guest lecture on "Urban Language Research" as part of the lecture "Language Variation in Austria" on 23 June 2022, thanks to the invitation of their colleagues from PP03 of the SFB "German in Austria". They presented both the development of urban language research and specifically the research project "Vienna and Graz - cities and their influential force" to interested German studies students at the University of Vienna.

09/12 - 12/12/2021: 46th Austrian Linguistic Conference (ÖLT)

All scientific associates participated in the 46th Austrian Linguistic Conference (ÖLT), which took place online. Elisabeth Scherr organised a workshop called "Vom Einzelfall zum System. Quantitative und qualitative Methoden zur empirischen Erforschung grammatischer Strukturen in historischen Quellen" together with her colleague Christian Braun, Ann Kathrin Fischer presented "Grazer /l/-Variation – [fͻl],[foi] oder [fuɭ] interessant?" at the workshop "Phonetik ist (fast) alles, was zählt" and Teresa Monsberger & Dragana Rakocevic as well as Gerrit Tscheru held single talks about "„Kriegst eh alles, was du willst.“ Funktionale Merkmale der Partikel eh in der gesprochenen Sprache" and "Kann ich jetz dazu nix sagen. Zum gesprochensprachlichen Gebrauch von Pronominaladverbien im Großraum Graz".

07/10 - 08/10/2021: Cooperation Workshop "Variatio delectat"

In October, the 3rd international cooperation workshop for young researchers from the Universities of Kiel and Graz "Variatio delectat. Aktuelle Forschungsberichte zur Variationsdynamik des Deutschen" took place. In this online workshop the young researchers exchanged information about their research projects through individual presentations and received input, ideas and feedback from their colleagues. All project staff participated with a presentation and entered into a fruitful discussion with their colleagues from Kiel.

08/11 - 10/11/2019: International Workshop "Urban and Rural Language Research"

In cooperation with Prof. Sali Tagliamonte and the Department of Linguistics of the University of Toronto, the international workshop "Urban and Rural Language Research: Variation, Identity and Innovation" took place from 08/11 to 10/11 in Canada. Together with five members of his project staff, project leader Prof. Arne Ziegler travelled to Toronto for professional exchange concerning the individual research projects. Despite using heterogeneous methods, approaches or data and exploring different languages there were some parallels concerning the comparison of rural and urban speech data. The exchange was enriching from a professional as well as acultural perspective and the researchers regarded the workshop as success.

16/05 - 18/05/2019: PhD-Workshop in Kiel

In the course of the workshop "Sprachkontakt und -perzeption": Forschungsberichte zur Varietätendynamik in Deutschland und Österreich", organised by researchers at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, the project leader Arne Ziegler and the scientific staff represented by Stefanie Edler, Ann Kathrin Fischer, Nina Kleczkowski, Georg Oberdorfer and Gerrit Tscheru exchanged with the team around Markus Hundt ideas about their recent research topics. All workshop participants had the opportunity to present their research work and subsequently discuss about it with the colleagues.

31/10 - 03/11/2018: Urban Language Research: Variation - Contact - Perception

During the international conference "Urban Language Research: Variation - Contact - Perception" at the University of Graz, which was organised by the project team, three scientific associates had the opportunity to present their research projects. Kristina Herbert gave a talk titled "Language and Identity. Socio-situational aspects of urban communication in Graz", Stefanie Edler talked about "Urban intra-lingual repertoires and the situational dimension. The case of clitisation: manifestations and distribution along the vertical spectrum" and Ann Kathrin Fischer about "A sociolinguistic view on older people’s interaction in urban Austria".

06/09 - 08/09/2018: 2nd International Conference on Sociolinguistics in Budapest

Stefanie Edler and Ann Kathrin Fischer had the opportunity to give talks at the 2nd International Conference on Sociolinguistics. Stefanie Edler's talk focused on "Vertical variation in urban language use - the Austrian case" and Ann Kathrin Fischer's talk was about "Older people's communication practices in Vienna and Graz".

27/06/ - 30/06/2018: 22nd Sociolinguistics Symposium in Auckland

From June 27th to June 30th the Sociolinguistics Symposium took place for the 22nd time and for the first time outside of Europe, namely in Auckland, NZ. Project leader Prof. Arne Ziegler and scientific associate Kristina Herbert organised the long colloquium "Languages and varieties in contact - the Austrian case" in which they as well as Ann Kathrin Fischer and other researchers from the SFB "German in Austria" gave talks on the subject. Arne Ziegler and Kristina Herbert talked about "Crossroads in analysing urban language variation. Towards a multidimensional approach in modern sociolingustics" and Ann Kathrin Fischer gave a talk entitled "Elderly's interaction shaped by mobility and social contact".

18/01/ - 19/01/2017: "Language, Place and Periphery" in Copenhagen

The conference was a collaboration of two sociolinguistic projects: LaPur (Language and Place) and Dialect in the Periphery, both projects ending in 2018. Prof. Arne Ziegler and scientific associate Ann Kathrin Fischer gave a talk titled "Vienna and Graz - Cities and their influential force".

08/12/ - 10/12/2017: 43rd Austrian Linguistic Conference (ÖLT)

At the workshop "Phonetics in and around Austria", organised by Sylvia Moosmüller and Michaela Rausch-Supola at the 43rd Austrian Linguistic Congress 2017 in Klagenfurt, scientific associate Stefanie Edler gave a talk entitled "On the realisation of the perfect past participle prefix in socio-economic interaction".

23/07/ - 28/07/2017: AILA in Rio de Janeiro

This year the World Congress of AILA (International Association of Applied Linguistics) took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The theme "Innovation and Epistemological Challenges in Applied Linguistics" aimed at fostering discussions about innovative research agendas to address social practices and how they challenge the way we comprehend, produce and transform knowledge in the area. Prof. Arne Ziegler and scientific associate Kristina Herbert gave a talk titled "Blurred lines and fuzzy borders – Towards the loss of varieties in urban language use".

06/06/ - 09/06/2017: International Conference on Language Variation in Europe (ICLaVE)

The international conference on language variation in Europe (ICLaVE) is one of the most important platforms in this field of research. Project part 04 was also present with a talk by Kristina Herbert und Stefanie Edler titled “Grasping urban language – setting up a framework for analysing variation in cities and their surroundings” in a panel organised by Ludwig Breuer und Lars Bülow (title: "Experimental approaches in the realm of language variation").

19/03/ - 22/03/2017: Young researchers' conference "Variationslinguistik trifft Textlinguistik" in Ascona/CH

The conference focused on natural languages, their heterogenic nature and various linguistic forms of realisations by applying variationist and linguistic analyses. Nina Bercko spoke about the subjunctive II in her talk titled "Südmittelbairische Verbalflexion in alltagssprachlicher Verwendung im der Stadt-Land-Vergleich”.

19/11/2016: 42nd Austrian Linguistic Conference (ÖLT)

Nina Bercko spoke about the subjunctive II in her talk titled "Südmittelbairische Verbalflexion in alltagssprachlicher Verwendung im Stadt-Land-Vergleich”. In their talk "Sprachliche Diversität im urbanen Raum. Ansätze zur Untersuchung horizontaler und vertikaler Variation in Wien und Graz" Stefanie Edler and Ann Kathrin Fischer focused on methodological issues.

07/07/2016: Poster presentation at the DiÖ-conference

At the conference "German in Austria and Other Pluricentric Contexts. Variation – Contact – Perception", we had the opportunity to present our project “Vienna and Graz – cities and their influential force” during the official poster session.

15/06 - 18/06/2016: Lecture at the Sociolinguistics Symposium

During the 21st Sociolinguistics Symposium in June 2016 in Murcia (Spain), project leader Prof. Arne Ziegler and scientific associate Kristina Herbert gave a lecture titled “Vienna and Graz – Cities and their influential force: Towards a new methodological and empirical approach in urban sociolinguistic research”.
