16/05/2022 Podcast: How do cities talk?

Project associate Gerrit Tscheru gave an interview about our research project for a podcast of the AirCampus of the University of Graz. The podcast was intended to promote our station at the Long Night of Research (in the pop-up-store in the Herrengasse, Graz), where we wanted to bring our research closer to the interested public.

March 2022: Question of the Month

Project associate Gerrit Tscheru answered the question "Is it enough to replace German words with Austrian words to sound Austrian?" which was asked by the interested public alongside the Citizen-Science-Project IamDiÖ. Here you can read the answer.

15/03/2022: Blog post "Eh already know what eh means!? On the trail of a very Austrian word"

In a new blog post, project members Teresa Monsberger and Dragana Rakocevic focus on a small word that often has a big effect - namely the particle eh in spoken language. They describe various dimensions of meaning and modes of functioning using examples in different conversational contexts. It becomes clear that eh is quite complex, as it often cannot be clearly assigned or interpreted.

15/04/2021: Blog post "Perspectives on language chance in Austria"

Scientific associate Teresa Monsberger wrote a blog article about language chance, a topic which is treated highly emotional in discourse. Though, linguistic research deals with language variation in an interested and nonjudgmental way. How participants of our project view language change can be read here.

15/11/2020: Retrospective on the (not yet) past year: A new focus of the urban-language-project presents itself

A new research focus of our project in stage two will be among others the field of external multilingualism and language contact phenomena. More precisely, we will look at spoken language data of speakers of Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian and Montenegrin origin and the influence of this group of speakers on German in Austria, especially in the urban area. Scientific associate Dragana Rakocevic gives here a peek behind the scenes of our new research field.

08/11 - 10/11/2019: O Canada! A research trip through a country in which maple syrup and Niagara Falls are flowing

Project leader Prof. Arne Ziegler travelled with five members of his research team to Canada to participate in a workshop organised by Prof. Sali Tagliamonte and her team of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Toronto for professional exchange. Here you can read a little travel report (blog in German).

08/09 - 12/09/2018: FWF BE OPEN - Science & Society Festival

Project members informed the interested public at the Marie-Theresien-Platz in Vienna about scientific issues in the course of the „BE OPEN – Science & Society Festival“ of the Austrian Science Fund. The visitors had the chance to do scientific research in interactive activities exploring lingusitics. For further information have a look here.

27/06 - 30/06/2018: Around the world and back again: DiÖ in Auckland/NZ

Prof. Arne Ziegler, Kristina Herbert and Ann Kathrin Fischer travelled among other linguists of the SFB "German in Austria" to Auckland, New Zealnd, in late June 2018 to participate in the Sociolinguistic Symposium 22. Here you can read a little travel report (blog in German).

15/03/2018: Blog post about data collection in linguistics

How is authentic data collected in linguistics? What is recorded and by whom? These and other interesting questions are answerd by scientific associate Nina Bercko in her blog entry. Click here (blog in German) to read the article.

11/11/2017: Achtung Forschung! The world of tomorrow.

How does everyday interaction take place in the urban area and how far do social structures of the city imprint the dynamics of urban communication? These questions are dealt with by looking both at speakers’ specific individual patterns or characteristics and at generally observed tendencies. Of particular interest is the group of young speakers as their language use shapes the interaction in cities significantly. Ann Kathrin Fischer, one of our project team members, gave a talk together with Georg Oberdorfer (from the project Youth language(s) in Austria) about “Sprechen in der Stadt. Urbane Lebensräume und Jugendsprache” ("Urban Communication. Urban living areas and youth language") on Novemer 11 2017. Additionally, there was an interactive station called “Wie wir morgen sprechen” ("How we will speak tomorrow") where interested people were able to slip into the role of a researcher. More information about the event can be found here.

23/07 – 28/07/2017: Language research meets Brasilian hospitalitiy – PP04 at the AILA 2017

Prof. Arne Ziegler and Kristina Herbert traveled to the world conference of AILA (International Association of Applied Linguistics) in Rio de Janero from 23/07 – 28/07/2017. Here you can read a short travel report (blog in German).

17/3/2017: Nice to Graz you! Behind the scenes of the PP04 in Graz
